Led Zep Sued, Allegedly Ripped-Off 'Stairway' Riff

A new lawsuit claims that Led Zeppelin lifted the opening riff of "Stairway To Heaven" from another band's song.

An attorney for the trust of Randy California, the deceased guitar player of the 1970s band Spirit, filed the suit, along with Spirit founding bass player Mark Andes.

The suit alleges that Led Zeppelin lifted the opening from the instrumental Spirit song "Taurus," which is featured on Spirit's self-titled 1968 album.

If you're curious, yes...both bands played together several times.

California was quoted in 1997 as saying, "...the guys made millions of bucks on it and never said 'Thank you'...  He drowned in 1997.

BusinessWeek estimates that the song had earned $562 million by 2008.

Decide for yourself: here's the Spirit song "Taurus."  Pay extra attention at the :42 second mark.
