Bon Jovi Scores Fifth #1 Album with What About Now, Beats Back Bowie
Bon Jovi has scored a #1 debut on the Billboard album chart...because they can.
The veteran band's new album What About Now, featuring the lead single "Because We Can," has entered the chart at #1, with first-week sales of 96,000 according to Nielsen Soundscan. This is the band's third straight album to debut at #1, and their fifth #1 album overall.
While experts had predicted a neck-and-neck race for the top between Bon Jovi and another veteran act -- David Bowie, who released his first new album in 10 years on the same day -- the Jersey rockers pulled ahead over the weekend, thanks to strong CD sales at Walmart and Target. The band's appearance on American Idol on Thursday probably didn't hurt, either.
But Bowie didn't do too badly: his album The Next Day debuts at #2, with sales of 85,000. Believe it or not, this is the legendary British rocker's highest-charting album ever in the U.S.
