Carlos Santana Pays Tribute to Late Doors Keyboardist, Talks Collaborating with Old Band Mates

Carlos Santana has long considered The Doors to be one of his favorite bands of all-time, so he obviously was saddened by the passing of the group's keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, who died of bile-duct cancer at age 74 on May 20.  Manzarek collaborated with the guitar legend on a version of "Riders on the Storm" that appeared on Santana's 2010 album, Guitar Heaven, and Carlos says he was hoping to work with Ray and the other surviving Doors on another recording.

"I wanted to do a song by John Lee Hooker [with them,] because The Doors were two things -- John Lee Hooker and John Coltrane," he tells ABC News Radio.  "So I wanted to do [a cover of Hooker's] 'Big Legs, Tight Skirts'…and then Ray left.  He went to the other side.  Now him and Jim [Morrison are] together."

Ever a believer in the power of the spirit, Santana says still hopes to play with Manzarek, declaring, "We'll see if we can do something in the future."  He adds, "I'm sad that my brother passed, but I'm happy that he's not suffering."

Meanwhile, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer also shared a bit of information about two other projects on which he's working, his autobiography and a planned album reuniting many of the original and/or early members of the Santana band.

Regarding the memoir, which is expected to be published sometime next year, Carlos reports, "We're just about there.  We got a few more things to touch upon and then it'll be ready."

As for the reunion album, the guitarist says he envisions it to be a follow-up to 1971'sSantana III, which was the last record before the original lineup began to splinter.

"We want to create Santana IV," he tells ABC News Radio.  He adds that spoke with most of his old band mates "and we're ready.  Hopefully by spring, it'll be done."

Carlos' current Santana lineup wrapped up the latest series of shows for their ongoing Las Vegas residency on Sunday, and they'll hit the road again in early July for about a month's worth of European tour dates.  You can check out the group's complete itinerary at Santana.com.
